25 years of Kyrgyzstan’s independence: lost hopes and debatable Constitution

BISHKEK (TCA) — A quarter-century has passed since the memorable August 31, 1991, when Declaration of State Independence of Kyrgyzstan was adopted. That day ended a centuries-long history when the Kyrgyz people was deprived of its statehood, President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev said yesterday in Bishkek during the holiday events in honor of the 25th anniversary of the country’s independence.

Kyrgyzstan’s budget: spending up, revenue down

BISHKEK (TCA) — Kyrgyzstan will allocate 20.1 billion soms for repayment of the public debt in 2017, Minister of Finance Adylbek Kasymaliev said at the public hearing of the country’s draft budget for the next year. Of these, 11 billion soms will be allocated for the repayment of the external debt and 9 billion for the domestic debt. In subsequent years, this amount will grow to 26.9 billion soms in 2018 and to 29.2 billion soms in 2019.

Kazakhstan: a quarter-century of post-Soviet illusions (part 5)

ALMATY (TCA) — Kazakhstan turned out to be the last Soviet republic to formally declare its independence on December 16, 1991, almost half a year after the bell for the USSR had tolled in Moscow. Although stagnant in the political domain, Kazakhstan made spectacular economic progress into the new century. But it remains exposed to setbacks as weak spots now appear to have remained in place.
