Global activists petition World Bank to suspend lending to Uzbek agriculture

TASHKENT (TCA) — Uzbek civil society activists on behalf of more than 140,000 people from around the world on March 9 in Washington, DC presented a petition to World Bank President Dr. Jim Yong Kim, calling on the Bank to suspend lending to the agriculture sector in Uzbekistan until the Uzbek government changes its policy of forced labor in the cotton industry, said the Cotton Campaign, a global coalition of labor, human rights, investor and business organizations coalesced to end forced labor of children and adults in the cotton sector of Uzbekistan.

Kazakhstan pegs oil production to global oil price

Kyrgyzstan received $818 million of FDI in 2015

BISHKEK (TCA) — In 2015 Kyrgyzstan received US $818.8 million of foreign direct investments (FDI), an increase by 12.6 percent or $91.7 million compared to 2014, the country’s Economy Ministry said on March 9.

Japan provides $2.2 million for strengthening Tajik-Afghan border security

DUSHANBE (TCA) — The Government of Japan has provided 267 million Japanese yens (approx. $2.26 million) to the project of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) aimed at strengthening capacities of law enforcement agencies of Tajikistan responsible for border control between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, as well as enhancing the border security in Tajikistan’s Khatlon region, UNODC said.
