OSCE assesses impact of economic crisis on independent media in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE (TCA) — Enhancing the professional development of journalists, training young reporters, making greater use of multimedia, establishing commercial departments as part of editorial offices, and creating an alternative system of newspaper distribution were some of the recommendations presented by the OSCE Office in Tajikistan in their survey on the impact of the financial crisis on the country’s independent media, the OSCE Office said.

Iran and Armenia to create free trade zone to expand Iran’s ties with EEU

TEHRAN (TCA) — Armenia, a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) that also includes Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia, says it is working on a plan with Iran to create a free economic zone between the two countries, Iran’s PressTV news agency reported on August 29.

FAO launches new global initiative: Coping with water scarcity in agriculture

DUSHANBE (TCA) — The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is launching a new Global initiative named “Coping with water scarcity in agriculture: a global framework for action in a changing climate” during the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (CoP22) in Morocco, which will be held in November, the FAO office in Tajikistan said on August 30.

Suicide bomber attacks Chinese embassy in Bishkek

BISHKEK (TCA) — An unidentified suicide car bomber attacked the Chinese Embassy in Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek in the morning of August 30, killing himself and wounding three embassy employees.

Turkmenistan’s president visits Germany

ASHGABAT (TCA) — After her talks with Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov in Berlin on August 29, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Turkmenistan has agreed to discuss the possibility of giving foreign diplomats access to its prisons, RFE/RL reports.

U.S. helps preserve Turkmenistan’s cultural heritage

ASHGABAT (TCA) — On August 29, the U.S. Embassy in Ashgabat awarded $85,600 to the National Administration for the Study, Preservation and Restoration of Cultural and Historical Monuments of Turkmenistan from the 2016 Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) program. The award ceremony was held at the Fine Arts Museum of Turkmenistan with the participation of U.S. Ambassador Allan Mustard, U.S. Embassy staff members and officials from the Government of Turkmenistan involved in administering AFCP projects, and representatives of local cultural institutions involved in the study and preservation of Turkmenistan’s cultural and historical heritage, the U.S. Embassy in Ashgabat said.
