The Second World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan: impressive events, huge costs

BISHKEK (TCA) — The Second World Nomad Games (WNG) are over, and it is time to sum up all the pluses and minuses and draw some conclusions. Delegations from 62 countries took part in the Games, which took place from September 3 to 8 at Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. More than 500 journalists from foreign and domestic media covered the event.

Large potential of small hydro power plants in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK (TCA) — After exporting electricity for decades, Kyrgyzstan has turned into an electricity importer last year; so the issue of power supply is now very relevant. The potential of renewable electricity sources is 840 million tons of standard fuel but the country currently uses only 1% of it. That was said at the recent international roundtable in Bishkek to discuss the latest small hydro power technologies.

UNDP, Finland support agricultural producers and exporters in south Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK (TCA) — The official presentation and demonstration of the mobile grain drying equipment was held last week in Gairat village of Kara-Suu district of Kyrgyzstan’s Osh province. The equipment was provided as part of UNDP’s “Aid for Trade” project funded by the Government of Finland, UNDP in the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

Atambayev orders probe against former Kyrgyz interim government members

BISHKEK (TCA) — Kyrgyzstan President Almazbek Atambayev on September 15 ordered the General Prosecutor’s Office to ensure a thorough investigation into the involvement of members of the country’s 2010 interim government in the escape to abroad in 2010 of Kadyrzhan Batyrov, the then leader of Kyrgyzstan’s Uzbek minority, whom Kyrgyz authorities call “the leader of separatists”.

EBRD and EU boost finance for energy efficiency in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK (TCA) — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union (EU) are stepping up their support to build a sustainable, green economy in Kyrgyzstan. The Bank is extending a loan equivalent to US $3 million in local currency to KICB, a leading bank in the country, to finance energy savings for businesses and residential homeowners under the Kyrgyz Sustainable Energy Financing Facility (KyrSEFF), the EBRD said on September 15.
