Kazakhstan: crisis demands snap elections

ALMATY (TCA) — State officials in oil crisis-hit Kazakhstan have discovered a $20 billion hole on the balance sheet of the National Wealth Fund. Should the state funds be spent this way on, the state coffers will be empty before the end of this decade. A political crisis is looming. In a move to avoid it, the Parliament has applied for snap elections to be held as early as March this year.

Kyrgyzstan denounces agreements with Russia on hydropower plants construction

BISHKEK (TCA) — On January 22, President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev signed laws on denunciation of agreements between the governments of Kyrgyzstan and Russia on construction and operation of Kambarata-1 hydropower plant (HPP) and the Upper Naryn HPPs cascade. The agreements were signed on September 20, 2012 in Bishkek during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Kyrgyzstan.
