Tajikistan security: recalling past Civil War under present situation

LONDON (TCA) — In December 1992, seven months after the start of the sectarian Tajik Civil War, the Russian 201st Motor Rifle Division recaptured the Tajik capital of Dushanbe which had been held by the United Tajik Opposition, a coalition of Islamists, nationalists and democrats. The 201st Division was a unit of the Russian Army, stationed in Tajikistan after the withdrawal from Afghanistan. The 201st were the border guards on the periphery of the Soviet Union with the 810 mile long border with Afghanistan to the south and the turbulent Chinese province of Xinjiang to the East.

China-Kazakh project to build metallurgical plant frozen in south Kazakhstan

ASTANA (TCA) — The project to construct a metallurgical plant in the South Kazakhstan province through Chinese investments has been frozen due to the ongoing crisis, said the Chairman of Kazakhstan’s national investment and export promotion agency KAZNEX INVEST Borisbiy Zhangurazov, Novosti-Kazakhstan news agency reported.

Tajikistan, World Bank sign project to strengthen public finance management

DUSHANBE (TCA) — Tajikistan’s Finance Minister Abdusalom Qurboniyon and the World Bank Country Manager for Tajikistan, Patricia Veevers-Carter, on February 17 signed an agreement to finance the Public Finance Management Modernization Project II (PFM-II). The project is financed from the International Development Association in the amount of US$10 million and from the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) in the amount of US $9.8 million, the World Bank said.

Iranian company to produce safflower oil in northern Kazakhstan

ASTANA (TCA) — A company from Iran is going to grow safflower (an oil-bearing crop) in Kazakhstan’s Kostanai province and build a plant for its processing, said the province’s Governor Arkhimed Mukhambetov, Novosti-Kazakhstan news agency reported.
