Kazakhstan and Greece to strengthen cooperation, expand trade

ASTANA (TCA) — Co-Chairs of the Kazakh-Greek Intergovernmental Commission on Economic and Technological Cooperation — Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Roman Vassilenko and Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic Georgios Katrougkalos — discussed bilateral political, trade and economic cooperation in Astana on February 5. The Greek delegation also included representatives of the business community, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry reported.

Uzbekistan: activist freed after 9 years in prison

TASHKENT (TCA) — An Uzbek journalist and rights activist, Dilmurod Saiid, was released from prison on February 3. Saiid was arrested in February 2009 on charges of forgery and extortion and sentenced to twelve and a half years in prison. He is known for reporting on human rights violations in Uzbekistan.

Kyrgyzstan: US gives one billion KGS to support healthy nutrition of children

BISHKEK (TCA) — The U.S. government, through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), has allocated over one billion Kyrgyz som to support healthy nutrition for children — the future of Kyrgyzstan — in schools and kindergartens throughout the country. The key objective of this program is to improve nutrition and literacy and primary education in the country, the U.S. Embassy in Bishkek said on February 5.

EBRD helps to clean up Tajikistan’s second largest city

DUSHANBE (TCA) — Solid waste management was one of those vital public services that suffered in Khujand, the second largest city in Tajikistan, before the local authorities turned to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which partnered with donors and other financial institutions to cover, through a combination of loans, grants and technical assistance, the costs of repairing the city’s infrastructure, the EBRD press office reported.
