Free trade zone with India may add $2.7 billion to EEU’s total GDP

BISHKEK (TCA) — The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) comprising Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia could add as much as $2.7 billion to its GDP in the long term from creating a free trade zone with India, Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Trade Minister Veronika Nikishina said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on June 1, Sputnik news agency reported.

Report cites progress and challenges in Afghanistan’s health sector

KABUL (TCA) — The World Bank on June 1 announced the results of a review of progress achieved in the health sector in Afghanistan from 2002-2017. Conducted by World Bank experts and an independent group from the University of Toronto, the review found that many key health indicators had improved more rapidly in Afghanistan than in most other countries that had started at a similar level of development.

Caspian Sea dispute: where solutions jump ahead of problems

LONDON (TCA) — A fair division of the Caspian seabed including exploitation rights has been subject to debate for a quarter of a century now, with time and again the governments of littoral states — Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Russia — assuring that they were on the brink of clinching a comprehensive agreement. At the bottom of the dispute is the question whether or not the Caspian waters should be seen as a lake or a sea. In the former case, international law requires a convention signed by all littoral states, dividing the entire waterbed into sections. The sea-option prescribes that each coastal state has authority over the waters down to 20 nautical miles from the shore, beyond which navigation is free and fishing and other exploitation rights should be either unlimited or defined by either bi- or multilateral agreements.

Kyrgyzstan presents investment opportunities to UAE business

BISHKEK (TCA) — For 25 years, since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kyrgyzstan and the United Arab Emirates, not a single serious joint project has been implemented, although there is great potential for cooperation, President of Kyrgyzstan’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry Marat Sharshekeev said at the Kyrgyzstan-UAE business forum held in Bishkek last week.

GM Uzbekistan to sell cars for national currency inside the country

TASHKENT (TCA) — Starting from June 1, 2017, the sale of the whole range of passenger cars produced by General Motors Uzbekistan joint venture will be carried out on the domestic market for the national currency, the soum. It is stipulated by the Decree of the President of Uzbekistan dated May 26 “On measures to improve pricing for products manufactured by General Motors Uzbekistan”, the Jahon information agency reports.
