BISHKEK (TCA) — Kyrgyzstan’s President Almazbek Atambayev took an important step toward curbing violence against women when he signed a new domestic violence law and accompanying legislation on April 27, Human Rights Watch said on May 10. The law, which replaces a 2003 version, includes measures to improve protections for victims of domestic abuse and strengthen police and judicial response.

ASTANA (TCA) — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is joining a strategic program to significantly upgrade irrigation systems in Kazakhstan with a US $180 million financing package. Loan agreements were signed during the Bank’s Annual Meeting in Cyprus by EBRD First Vice President, Phil Bennett, and the Minister of Economic Affairs and Budget Planning of Kazakhstan, Bakhyt Sultanov, the EBRD said on May 10.

DUSHANBE (TCA) — On May 10, Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon visited Rogun city to inspect construction works at the Rogun hydropower plant (HPP) on the Vakhsh River, the president’s press service said.
