Uzbekistan’s Akbar Juraev Takes Three Golds at World Weightlifting Championships

Uzbek weightlifter Akbar Juraev delivered one of the standout performances of the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships by claiming three gold medals in the men’s 110 kg class, breaking world records and asserting his dominance in the sport. The championships, held October 2–11 in Førde, Norway, drew nearly 500 athletes from 87 countries to compete under the auspices of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). On Day 9, the 110 kg division was one of the marquee finals, especially as two Uzbek Olympic champions – Juraev and Ruslan Nuridinov – faced off in the same category.  Juraev, 25, came in with a formidable résumé: already a world champion in 2021 and 2023, and an Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo 2020. After a near-miss at the 2024 Paris Games, where he took silver in the 102 kg class, Juraev said he was “back at my right weight” and hungry for redemption.  In Norway, Juraev delivered a flawless sequence. On his third snatch attempt he lifted 196 kg, setting a new world record in the snatch. He followed that with a 232 kg clean and jerk, reaching a combined total of 428 kg, also a world record. He even attempted 245 kg in the clean and jerk, later joking that he was “just messing around.” After the victory, Juraev said, “I am back at my right weight. I can eat properly, train properly. I feel good, very happy.” He added that last year’s Olympic disappointment still drives him: “That’s why I have silver and not gold.”  Juraev’s sweep of snatch, clean & jerk, and total golds made him a three-time world champion. Meanwhile, his compatriot Nuridinov, the 33-year-old veteran and Rio 2016 Olympic champion, also shone in Førde. He lifted 186 kg in the snatch and 228 kg in the clean and jerk, earning two bronzes (in clean & jerk and total) with a combined 414 kg. His performance underscored not only his own resilience but also Uzbekistan’s continuing dominance in the world of weightlifting.

Where Wings Grow: New Show at Aspan Gallery, Almaty

Let’s move Aspan Gallery from name to place, from reputation to reality. As one of the Kazakh galleries most visible on the fair circuit, known for its impeccable presentations and strong roster of Central Asian artists, visiting its headquarters in Almaty felt almost inevitable. It didn’t disappoint. Tucked into the underground floor of a shopping complex in a leafy area of Almaty, where you might catch a glimpse of a stylish passerby balancing a matcha cup before descending the stairs, the gallery unfolds as a quiet enclave. There, Where Wings Grow opens as a multifaceted meditation on the cycles of nature, and particularly on the steppe, explored by several Central Asian artists through ecological, historical, and mythic lenses. What emerges is not a nostalgic portrait of a nomadic past but a layered reflection on resilience and renewal. At the center of the curatorial vision is Alan Medoev, the archaeologist whose 1960s expeditions uncovered hundreds of sites across the Kazakh steppe. His discoveries challenged Soviet portrayals of the region as an empty expanse and instead presented it as a cradle of memory. The exhibition extends that lineage, tracing how the steppe continues to act as an archive where cultural, personal, and ecological time intersect. The installation is clean and deliberate: suspended collages, unframed paintings, and subtle shifts in light. Walking through, one feels the exhibition itself has been conceived as a kind of landscape. At a distance, some pieces seemed almost naïve or casual in their painterly surfaces, but up close, their textures, materials, and embedded details revealed far more intricate worlds. This is true of Saule Suleimenova’s Plasticographies (two works titled Zhana Omir – New Life and Steppe Romanticism). From afar, they appear to be simple, even sentimental landscapes. Up close, however, they are revealed as collages of discarded plastic: fragments of packaging, commercial logos, counterfeit brands, and old ID cards. Suleimenova, who grew up in Almaty and trained as an architect before turning to socially engaged art, calls plastic “a treasure” and uses it to question both waste and memory. Within these luminous surfaces are startling details such as embryonic forms and small figures hidden in the texture. These unsettling images evoke new generations coming into a world shaped by waste, suggesting both renewal and ecological crisis. Steppe Romanticism distills the landscape into minimal horizons and contemplative silence. Yet knowing it is made of plastic prevents forgetting the contradiction, serenity marked by civilization’s residue. It recalls how landscapes themselves operate, inviting from afar but, up close, layered with scars, residues, and histories. First Kazakh Woman in Space Returns to Earth on Blue Origin Flight

On October 8, 2025, Kazakh citizen Danna Karagussova successfully completed a suborbital flight aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft, becoming the first woman from Kazakhstan and the wider CIS, to travel into space. The mission marked the 15th crewed flight and the 16th successful launch and landing of the NS4 rocket operated by the company owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos. Karagussova’s return was announced by her son, Aituar Alibekov, on the social media platform Threads: “She’s back. The first space tourist from Kazakhstan and the CIS. Love you and so proud of you, Mom.” According to SciNews, the New Shepard launched from Blue Origin’s West Texas facility and returned to Earth approximately 10 to 12 minutes later, landing at 13:30 UTC (08:30 Texas time). Karagussova was joined by five other passengers: entrepreneur Jeff Elgin, engineer Clint Kelly III, startup founder Aaron Newman, Ukrainian businessman Vitalii Ostrovsky, and one individual who remained anonymous. The spacecraft reached an altitude of around 100 kilometers, crossing the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space, where passengers experienced several minutes of weightlessness and panoramic views of Earth. Ticket prices for Blue Origin’s commercial flights have not been publicly disclosed. Before the launch, Karagussova shared a photo from aboard the spacecraft, generating significant attention on social media. Kazakh blogger and entrepreneur Beibit Alibekov, her former husband, praised her accomplishment, emphasizing its historic significance. Earlier this year, The Times of Central Asia reported on Karagussova’s upcoming flight as part of Blue Origin’s NS-36 mission, part of a series of suborbital flights the company has conducted since 2021. Karagussova is a prominent Kazakh entrepreneur with more than 25 years of experience in media, event management, and distribution. She is also the co-founder of the Portals project, which combines science, art, and digital self-regulation technologies. Beyond her professional life, she is an avid mountaineer, having climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Elbrus, endeavors she sees as symbolic of her persistence and ambition. “The future of humanity lies in space. By exploring new horizons, we not only advance technology but also expand our own potential. For me, the NS-36 mission with Blue Origin is part of a research project and a step toward a dream I have pursued for many years,” she wrote on Instagram. Karagussova’s flight represents a milestone for Kazakhstan and the post-Soviet region. Globally, only a limited number of non-professional astronauts have traveled beyond Earth’s atmosphere, making her achievement a noteworthy addition to the growing history of commercial spaceflight.

Long-Distance Swimmers from Central Asia Cross Mediterranean Strait Together

Fueled by thoughts of family, country, and just reaching dry land, two men from Central Asia swam across the Strait of Bonifacio from the French island of Corsica to the Italian island of Sardinia, an open water route of about 15 kilometers whose varying winds and currents sometimes add to the challenge for ultramarathon swimmers. Askar Ospanov, a 66-year-old Kazakhstani, and Shavkat Musinov, a 42-year-old Uzbekistani, drew mental strength from each other even though they didn’t speak much while swimming in wetsuits for nearly eight hours on Sept. 26. The leader of their group was Rinat Mustafin, a 46-year-old swimmer from Russia who had crossed the strait in 2019 and prepared his friends for their Mediterranean feat. They were assisted by a support boat. “The sea that day was challenging — with strong currents and waves — but we stayed coordinated and focused,” Musinov, a Tashkent businessman, said this week. “What united us was the shared feeling that we were doing something meaningful, not only for ourselves but also for our region.” Musinov and Ospanov were the first people from their countries to swim across the Strait of Bonifacio, a challenge that isn’t overseen by a governing body but has won international recognition over the years. The World Open Water Swimming Association has listed it as one of the world´s top 100 island swims. While the Strait of Bonifacio is among the shorter ultramarathon distances for swimmers (the English Channel, for example, is a cold water challenge of about 33 kilometers), conditions can add to the difficulty level. “The two relatively close opposite coasts and the seabed with an average depth of 50 meters, which in any case does not exceed 100 meters, mean that the winds and currents that are channeled increase their intensity,” the association says. “The crossing is often characterized by non-linear trajectories and more or less demanding waves.” Musinov said he met Ospanov’s son, Galym, in the Sahara Desert during the Marathon des Sables ultramarathon in 2023, and they bonded while traversing 250 kilometers together across the Sahara Desert in Morocco. The Uzbek athlete later met the elder Ospanov – Musinov calls him “Asqa aga” with respect and affection – and described the Kazakhstani swimmer as an emblem of determination and discipline. Musinov and Mustafin, the Russian swimmer, kept the same pace as Ospanov so they could stay together. Ospanov said on Instagram that “team captain” Mustafin set the route. They ended up swimming nearly 17 kilometers because of the pull of the currents. “Shavkat swam second, occasionally looking back to check on me, while I tried to draft behind him,” said Ospanov, a former government worker. “Twice — at the 6 km and 11 km marks — Rinat gave me CrampFix just in time, helping me when I got a leg cramp (vinegar, as it turns out, can interrupt the body’s cramp reflex). Jackie Chan to Film New “Armour of God” Sequel in Kazakhstan

Legendary actor and filmmaker Jackie Chan is set to return to Kazakhstan to work on the latest installment of his iconic action franchise, Armour of God: Ultimatum. The project will be produced in partnership with Kazakhstan’s Salem Entertainment, which officially confirmed its involvement. “We can now officially reveal details of Jackie Chan’s visit to Almaty. He will be working on the new film Armour of God: Ultimatum. The fourth installment of this legendary saga will be filmed here in Kazakhstan,” the studio said in a statement. Chan visited Almaty in late September, prompting speculation in local media, including rumors he might attend a football match between Real Madrid and FC Kairat. However, the visit turned out to be professional: he was scouting filming locations with the Kazakh production team. “During his stay in Almaty, Jackie Chan joined our team in selecting filming sites. Most of the production will take place in Kazakhstan. We can’t reveal details yet, but it’s going to be something truly spectacular,” Salem Entertainment added. The original Armour of God premiered in 1986 and became an international box office success, cementing Chan’s status as a global star. A sequel followed in 1991, and the franchise was revived two decades later with Armour of God 3: Chinese Zodiac. For Kazakhstan, the production presents a rare opportunity to showcase its cinematic potential and diverse filming locations to a global audience. Chan remains famous for performing all his own stunts. In an interview with Haute Living, he confirmed that this principle still guides his work, even after six decades in the industry. “I always do my own stunts. It’s part of who I am, part of my profession and my identity. That won’t change until I retire. And retirement doesn’t interest me,” Chan said. He added that staying in peak physical condition has become instinctive: “I don’t need special preparation anymore. It’s already inside, in my heart, my mind, and my muscles. TCA Interview: Asia’s First New York Film Academy Campus Opens in Almaty

On 27 September, the New York Film Academy Kazakhstan (NYFA) opened the first branch of the world-renowned American film school in Central Asia. For young Kazakhstani and foreign students, this presents a unique opportunity to gain top-tier knowledge for future careers in the industry. The new campus was established through a partnership between Almaty University of Energy and Communications (Energo University) and the Dala Edge Creative Technology Park, with the opening ceremony attended by Michael Young, President and CEO of the New York Film Academy, and Sayasat Nurbek, Minister of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan. Gani Nygymetov, Rector of Energo University, spoke to The Times of Central Asia about the opportunities and prospects of NYFA Kazakhstan. TCA: How did the idea to establish the New York Film Academy Kazakhstan campus in Kazakhstan come about? GN: Energo University has been in existence for over 50 years and is one of the leading technical universities in Central Asia, specializing in engineering and energy. In February this year, we presented a new development strategy that includes a mission to remain a leader in energy education, while also expanding into telecommunications, IT, and techno-creative programmes. To achieve these goals, the 16-hectare Dala Edge Creative Technology Park was created near Almaty. Now, a branch of NYFA has opened there, its first campus in Asia. Previously, NYFA campuses were only located in Florence, New York, and Los Angeles. I am confident that the opening of the campus in Kazakhstan will give an additional impetus to the development of creative industries in the region and enable us to train specialists of international calibre. The Creative Technology Park will become a hub for professional training and innovative projects and will support the integration of students and professionals into the film, animation, and game design industries. TCA: Who teaches at NYFA Kazakhstan, exclusively American specialists, or are local experts also involved in the programme? What subjects are taught? GN: American specialists teach students in film directing, screenwriting, acting, 3D animation, visual effects, and game design. All programmes meet international standards, instruction is in English, and modern tools and methods used in the United States are employed. Inviting NYFA to Kazakhstan is part of a strategy to develop the country's academic potential. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education, led by Minister Sayasat Nurbek, is actively attracting leading international universities. Today, more than 40 renowned foreign universities have opened branches in Kazakhstan. This allows talented students to receive high-quality education at home and also attracts students from other countries in the region. Partnerships with international universities, including Anhalt University (Germany), which has also opened a branch at our university, and NYFA, help set high standards of education and expand opportunities for students.
