Erdogan: Turkmenistan Gas Exports to Turkey “Only a Matter of Time”

Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that it is "only a matter of time" before gas from Turkmenistan is exported to Turkey and Europe through the expanded Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) project. “Our long-standing cooperation, crowned with infrastructure investments such as Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipelines, and TANAP, has not only benefited Turkey and Azerbaijan but has also made significant contributions to the energy security of the region and Europe,” Erdogan said at the International Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition in Azerbaijan's capital of Baku. Two gas routes from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan are being reported. The Turkish Daily Sabah reports that this plan involves transporting gas by sea on gas carrying ships. Upstream, citing experts, reports that SOCAR will start negotiations with Turkmenistan on the resumption of gas supply through Iran under the exchange scheme. On June 4th, Turkey’s Botas Petroleum Pipeline and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR also signed agreements to promote an intergovernmental deal calling for cooperation on natural gas issues reached in May. In one of the five signed contracts, Botash and SOCAR must jointly organize the natural gas supply from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan and then through Turkey to other countries.

Turkmenistan Hosts European Exhibition on Energy-Saving

An ambitious and multi-faceted traveling exhibition “Transition to Renewable Energy Sources—Energy of the Future” has just opened at the Technology Center of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan. As reported by “Turkmenistan: Golden Age”, the exhibition, curated by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), presents the various means and measures developed by European countries to save energy. Divided into five sections, the exhibition provides a hands-on exploration of energy efficiency practices through interactive touch panels and by immersing themselves in virtual reality, visitors can envisage the world in the future. The exhibition highlights the multilevel aspects, challenges, and potential of the global energy transition from society, politics, economics, and science perspectives, and during its tour, aims to encourage widespread dialogue and an exchange of knowledge and views on decarbonization and global energy transition. Regarding the tour, project manager Yasmine Deren, stated, “This exhibition started three years ago and has already visited Europe, Asia, the Gulf States and in Central Asia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. We are happy that the exhibition is now being shown in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan and afterwards, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan." The exhibition will be displayed Monday - Saturday in Ashgabat until 25 June and thereafter, in Turkmenistan's city of Mary.

Turkmenistan Officials in Georgia to Prepare for WTO Application

A delegation from Turkmenistan has arrived in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on a study visit to research the best practices for accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), and promotion of national trade policy. This was reported by the state media agency Turkmenportal. The visit, organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, will reportedly last from 27 to 31 May. The delegation includes representatives of the Ministry of Finance and Economy, Ministry of Justice, the Central Bank, and the State Customs Service. Meetings have been held with Georgia's Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tax Service, and Customs Department.

Turkmen Gas to Europe Mooted Again

Turkmenistan and Pakistan intend to independently finance the construction of the TAPI gas pipeline (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India) to transport Turkmen gas to Europe, according to a statement made by Pakistani Minister, Musadiq Malik, who said the decision was driven by the international community's reluctance to recognize the Afghan government, which has stalled foreign funding. "Turkmenistan, rich in gas reserves and currently only selling to China, has considered exporting its gas to Europe via an LNG train," Malik was quoted as saying by the Profit portal. The minister also talked about the idea of exporting Turkmen gas to the EU via Pakistan. According to this plan, the gas would be piped to Pakistan, and then transported to Europe by rail. According to previous agreements, the $10 billion TAPI gas pipeline project was to be 30% financed ($3 billion) by the participants, and 70% ($7 billion) by loans from international financial institutions. Of the 30% to be allocated by the participating countries, 85% ($2.55 billion) was from to Turkmenistan, and the other 5% ($150 million each) from Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

Turkmen Scientists Find Way to Make Depleted Gas Wells More Productive

The government of Turkmenistan has reported that a group of scientists working for the state company Türkmengaz have developed a new technology to increase the productivity of depleted gas wells. The technology, which uses hydrogen thermobaric chemicals, impacts the reservoir and increases production of oil, gas, and condensate. This allows for more efficient use of resources.

Turkmen Gas To Be Supplied To Turkey Via Azerbaijan And Georgia

An agreement has been reached on the transportation of natural gas from Turkmenistan to Turkey via Azerbaijan and Georgia. This deal was announced by Turkey's minister of energy and natural resources Alparslan Bayraktar. Chronicles of Turkmenistan report that Bayraktar met with Azerbaijani economy minister Mikail Jabbarov in Istanbul on May 14, after which the parties signed an agreement on increasing the capacity of several gas pipelines. Turkey's energy ministry said the deal would ensure that additional gas volumes from Azerbaijan and the Caspian region would be delivered to Turkey and Europe by 2030, although the exact volumes have yet to be announced. Bayraktar did not explain how the gas would be delivered from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan. There is currently no progress in the construction of a trans-Caspian gas pipeline, which would allow direct deliveries of raw materials. It is most probably a swap scheme of supplies through Iran -- this is how Turkmenistan exported gas to Azerbaijan from 2022 to 2024. However, in January 2024, exports were suspended because Ashgabat and Baku failed to agree on the volume and price of gas. Since then, neither side has reported resumption of supplies. Some experts believe that Azerbaijan re-exported Turkmen gas to Europe, mixing it with its own, and the reason for the cessation of purchases was the decline in gas prices on the European market, which made its resale unprofitable for Baku.
