Uzbekistan developing economy, tourism in Aral Sea area

TASHKENT (TCA) — Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has approved a Comprehensive Development Program for Muynak District of Karakalpakstan Autonomous Region for 2017-2018, the Jahon information agency reported. During two years, the program plans to implement 72 projects in industry, services and agricultural processing in the district located in the area of the shrinking Aral Sea.

Kyrgyzstan’s former prosecutor-general faces charges

BISHKEK (TCA) — The State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan has officially charged Aida Salyanova, a former prosecutor-general and now an opposition lawmaker, with abuse of office. She has been ordered not to leave the country pending the investigation of her case, 24.kg news agency reported with reference to Salyanova’s lawyer Ulan Jumakov.

EBRD president to visit Uzbekistan

TASHKENT (TCA) — A delegation of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), headed by President Suma Chakrabarti, will visit Uzbekistan on 15-17 March to discuss with the Uzbek authorities ways of increasing EBRD engagement with the country. The Bank has worked in Uzbekistan since 1993 and has a portfolio of investments there but since 2010 there have been no fresh operations, the EBRD press office said.
