Chinese companies to work at Khorgos free trade zone in Kazakhstan

ASTANA (TCA) — On February 17 in Shanghai (China), a delegation of Kazakhstan’s national railways company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) held talks with representatives of Chinese companies China Cosco Shipping and LLC GK Lianyungang Port on joint implementation of projects at special economic zone (SEZ) Khorgos – Eastern Gateway on the Kazakh-Chinese border, the KTZ press service said.

EU and Afghanistan sign cooperation agreement

KABUL (TCA) — The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice–President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, and the Minister of Finance of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Eklil Hakimi, on February 18 in Munich signed a Cooperation Agreement on Partnership and Development (CAPD), in the presence of Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani, the European External Action Service said.

US government opens commercial greenhouse in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE (TCA) — US Ambassador to Tajikistan Elisabeth Millard last week attended an opening ceremony for a new commercial greenhouse in Ghayrat village near Qurghonteppa. Several key stakeholders also attended the event, including Hidirzoda Makhfirat Umar, Deputy Governor of Tajikistan’s Khatlon Province, the US Embassy in Dushanbe reported.

Kyrgyzstan MPs blame Government for poor work on EEU integration

BISHKEK (TCA) — The Onuguu-Progress party faction in the Kyrgyz Parliament will seek the Government’s resignation due to its poor work on Kyrgyzstan’s integration into the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), the faction leader Bakyt Torobaev said on February 16. Earlier this month, the Ata Meken opposition parliamentary faction suggested expressing a vote of no confidence in the Government.

Kazakhstan’s banks merger: a remedy or a pain killer?

ALMATY (TCA) — Recently a minor-scale bank in Kazakhstan named KazInvest ran aground. Now, another one, Delta Bank, is moving towards the brink of bankruptcy. Yet another “junior”, Temirbank, formerly owned by BTA and now controlled by Fortebank, recently defaulted on its coupon repayment schedule as well. In 2016, Temirbank posted a net income of 10.875 billion tenge which turned into a net loss of 4.41134 billion for the full year during the last quarter. During the last three months, equity capital dwindled from 54.5 billion to 39.2 billion tenge. Current asset par value stands close to 357 billion tenge, but it remains unclear what the percentage of exposed assets within that amount is.
