ASTANA (TCA) — A two-week workshop in maternal and child healthcare for public health professionals from Afghanistan commenced at Nazarbayev University in Astana on March 31. The workshop marks an important milestone in the cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on capacitating Kazakhstan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) system within the framework of joint project “Promoting Kazakhstan’s Official Development Assistance Cooperation with Afghanistan”. The project is a multilateral partnership benefiting from close cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, UNDP, the Embassy of Japan to Kazakhstan and the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Kazakhstan. BISHKEK (TCA) — Each year, World Tuberculosis Day is marked on March 24. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) works with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic to fight this deadly infectious disease. Following a new roadmap on improving prevention and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) developed with USAID’s support, the Kyrgyz Republic is adopting new treatment models, modernizing the health system, and providing new incentives for doctors, the US Embassy in Bishkek reports. DUSHANBE (TCA) — In Tajikistan, more than 20 percent of children under the age of five are stunted. Stunting and undernutrition in childhood are usually the result of several contributing factors related to environment, food, hygiene, and health. Risks related to malnutrition are most concentrated in rural areas of Tajikistan, underscoring the large disparity between rural and urban areas, the World Bank reported on March 20. Continue reading
KABUL (TCA) — A new World Bank report finds that Afghanistan has shown improved health outcomes since 2003, with health services that have remained resilient even in highly insecure provinces. The report entitled Progress in the Face of Insecurity: Improving Health Outcomes in Afghanistan, finds however that the uptick in insecurity since 2010 has slowed some gains, the World Bank said on March 6. BISHKEK (TCA) — On March 6, the Ambassador of Switzerland to the Kyrgyz Republic Mrs. Véronique Hulmann and the Minister of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, Mr. Talantbek Batyraliev signed an agreement for a four-year project aiming at improving the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases, the Embassy of Switzerland in the Kyrgyz Republic said. BISHKEK (TCA) — As tuberculosis (TB) remains a public health concern in the Eastern European and Central Asian regions, a regional symposium being held on 1 and 2 March in Bishkek will tackle recent new approaches to treatment and urge for scale-up of new drugs and diagnostic tools. Hosted by the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the symposium brought together around 160 participants from the region, MSF reported. Continue reading
