Weekly Digest of Central Asia

BISHKEK (TCA) — The Publisher’s note: Central Asia is an important geopolitical area between Europe, Russia and China. It is in Central Asia that world powers have confronted each other for centuries; it is here that China needs to succeed with its new Silk Road Belt for direct access to the Western markets; and it is here that a large wealth of raw materials has its origin. Every week thousands of news appears all over the world in printed and online media and it is quite understandable that many of them may escape the attention of busy readers. USAID helps improve the quality of tuberculosis medicines in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT (TCA) — On June 16, Dr. Jatinder Cheema, Regional Mission Director, U.S. Agency for International Development/Central Asia and Dr. Mirzanazim Dusmuratov, Chairman of Board of the Uzbek State Joint Stock Pharmaceutical Company, Uzpharmsanoat, participated in a signing ceremony to formalize cooperation between Uzpharmsanoat and USAID on the implementation of the “Promoting the Quality of Medicines” Project in Uzbekistan, the US Embassy in Tashkent said.

AIIB approves loan to support hydro power project in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE (TCA) — The Board of Directors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) on June 15 approved a US $60 million loan for Tajikistan’s Nurek Hydropower Rehabilitation Project Phase I, co-financed with the World Bank. The project aims to rehabilitate and restore the generating capacity of three units of the Nurek hydropower plant, improve their efficiency and strengthen the safety of Nurek dam operations.
