ILO report says child labor phased out in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT (TCA) — The International Labor Organization (ILO) says the Government of Uzbekistan is making progress in reforms to address risks of forced labor in its cotton industry. In a report released on February 1, following its independent monitoring of the 2016 cotton harvest season, the ILO concludes organized child labor is now socially unacceptable in Uzbekistan and the practice has been phased out, the World Bank said in a press release.

Uzbekistan-US business forum held in Tashkent

TASHKENT (TCA) — The Uzbekistan-US annual business forum was held in Tashkent on February 1 with the participation of some 30 major US companies and representatives of Uzbek government agencies and companies. They discussed the current state and priority directions of economic and investment cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United States, the Jahon information agency reported.

Terrorism: the ‘forgotten dimensions’ of jihadism in Central Asia, China (part 1)

LONDON (TCA) — Are the governments of Central Asia’s post-Soviet republics taking effective action to root out the phantom of terrorism lurking in all corners of the region? The awkward question was carefully avoided during the latest peace talks on Syria in Astana. Fact remains, however, that thousands of nationals of Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and (most of all) Uzbekistan are “fighting” in Syria and northern Iraq. In the meantime a rather large number of them are also spreading over the world to replace terrorists originating from the Near-East to spread new waves of havoc, while others “bring terror home” by returning to their countries of origin ready to carry out attacks on their own communities. However, so far nobody has properly mapped the overall situation.
