Presidents of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan launch JV in Tajik city

TURSUNZADE, Tajikistan (TCA) — Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon on September 27 visited the Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO) state unitary enterprise in the Tajik city of Tursunzade and put into operation the first stage of the Tajik-Uzbek joint venture — Limited Liability Company TALCO-KRANTAS, the press service of the Tajik president reported. In July 2018, Krantas Group LLC of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan Aluminum Company established TALCO-KRANTAS plant for the production of truck cranes, tractor-trailers, semi-trailers and other types of machinery. The joint venture was created at the initiative of the presidents of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The joint venture will be assembling 12 types of cranes and special trucks. After commissioning of the second stage of the project, 40 types of special communal and construction machinery will be assembled here. While commissioning the joint venture, Rahmon and Mirziyoyev appreciated it as a lasting step towards strengthening industrial relations between the two friendly and neighboring states. The two presidents also got acquainted with the work of TALCO, Tajikistan’s largest aluminum producer. The plant, built in 1975, was transformed into Tajik Aluminum Company State Unitary Enterprise in 2007. TALCO unites several mining, chemical and metallurgical enterprises. It was stressed that TALCO had introduced modern technologies in the production of products and strengthened cooperation with the world's largest companies. TALCO has established expanded cooperation with the largest manufacturing enterprises of Uzbekistan for the last two years. In particular, this year during the state visit of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to Uzbekistan, TALCO signed an agreement on cooperation with Uzbek production enterprises, on the basis of which 10,000 tons of aluminum will be sent annually to Uzbekistan.

Tajikistan: aluminum production declines due to outdated equipment

DUSHANBE (TCA) — Over the past six years Tajikistan has seen decreasing production of primary aluminum, Avesta news agency reported citing Tajik Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade Gulru Jabborzoda. In her words, in 2017 Tajikistan produced 103 thousand tons of aluminum, 175 thousand tons less than in 2012. The reasons for the decrease were outdated technology and delayed supplies of fuel from Turkmenistan. “In 2012, high-quality aluminum of A-7 grade accounted for 70 percent of the total output of the Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO). At the world’s commodity exchanges, the price of aluminum is determined based on A-7 grade aluminum. For other aluminum grades, prices are $200-$300 lower. Today, the Tajik Aluminum Company does not produce A-7 grade aluminum due to its outdated equipment,” the deputy minister said. According to the ministry, last year Tajikistan exported 101 thousand tons of primary aluminum for $270 million, 3.2 percent less than in 2016. In November, Avesta reported that a new aluminum plant will be built on the grounds of the existing aluminum company in Tajikistan. Igor Sattarov, spokesman of Tajik Aluminum Company state unitary enterprise, then said that in 2018, Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO) will start a program of phased modernization of its aluminum production with the introduction of the latest technology. “The modernization program will allow in the near future replacing the outdated equipment with modern energy-saving equipment, which will help to greatly increase our aluminum production,” Sattarov said. The company plans to use Chinese aluminum production technology, which has proven energy efficient. During the visit of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon to China last year, Tajik Aluminum Company and China’s Yunnan Construction and Investment Holding Group signed a memorandum of cooperation on joint construction of a new aluminum plant on the grounds of TALCO. The new plant is to produce 503 thousand tons of aluminum per year and will create 1,100 new jobs. Construction will start in 2018 and should be completed in 1.5 years. The project is estimated to cost $1.6 billion. Aluminum is the largest export item of Tajikistan today.

Tajikistan to increase aluminum production to 300,000 tons by 2020

DUSHANBE (TCA) — The Tajik Aluminium Company (TALСO) plans to increase the production of primary aluminum to 300,000 tons by 2020, TALCO official representative Igor Sattarov said on September 12, Russia’s Sputnik news agency reported. "The production [of primary aluminum] will be brought up to 168,800 tons in 2018, to 188,800 tons in 2019, and to 300,000 tons in 2020," Sattarov said. According to Sattarov, TALСO can reach those rates due to the currently favorable market conditions and positive expectations for the future, as well as the introduction of new technologies of aluminum production. Besides, it is planned to consider the production of alumina on the territory of Tajikistan's nonconventional ore fields (nephelinic syenite, granatite and others). The estimated cost of the project amounts to approximately $1 billion. In early August, Tajik Minister of Economic Development and Trade Nematullo Hikmatullozoda said that projections for the production of primary aluminum in 2017 amounted to 148,000 tons. In 2016, Tajikistan produced 129,300 tons of primary aluminum which is a decrease of 7.2 percent in comparison with 2015. Aluminum, along with cotton, is among Tajikistan’s main export items. TALCO is the largest state-owned enterprise in Tajikistan with the designed capacity of 500,000 tons of aluminum per year. The company accounts for around 45 percent of Tajikistan’s GDP and 90 percent of the foreign exchange earnings. It is one of the largest taxpayers and plays a pivotal role in the national economy. The company also consumes around 40 percent of all electricity generated in Tajikistan.
