BISHKEK (TCA) — Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, which are highly prone to natural disasters and future climate change risks, will benefit from improved hydrometeorological services thanks to additional financing to the Central Asia Hydrometeorology Modernization Project (CAHMP). The World Bank Board of Executive Directors on August 1 approved US$ 11.5 million in additional loan financing for the project, which has aimed since 2011 to improve the accuracy and timeliness of weather and water forecasting in Central Asia, and thereby contribute to national efforts to protect the population and livelihoods from impacts of natural disasters. DUSHANBE (TCA) — Following the devastating floods that struck southern Tajikistan in May, the European Commission has allocated €60,000 (approximately TJS 63,000) in humanitarian funding to bring emergency assistance to communities affected by the disaster, the Delegation of the European Union to Tajikistan said. BISHKEK (TCA) — Kyrgyzstan is one of the most seismically active countries in Central Asia, and constantly at risk of earthquakes – with more than 300 registered annually. A recent study estimates that earthquakes in the country lead to economic losses of over US$ 280 million (or 4.3% of GDP) per year because of damaged buildings, property and infrastructure, the World Bank reported on its website. BISHKEK (TCA) — All citizens of Kyrgyzstan will potentially benefit from a Project that will ensure risk reduction investment in educational infrastructure, a stronger capacity to respond to disasters, and a better environment to scale-up the country’s mandatory disaster insurance program. The Enhancing Resilience in Kyrgyzstan Project has been approved by the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors, with US$ 20 million from the International Development Association (IDA), including US$ 10 million as a concessional credit and US$ 10 million as a grant, the World Bank said. ASTANA (TCA) — UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan Mr. Norimasa Shimomura and the Head of Cooperation Unit of the Delegation of the European Union (EUD) to Kazakhstan Mr. Johannes Stenbaek on 4-5 May visited the Aktobe region, where UNDP and EUD installed an early flood warning system within their joint pilot project called "Supporting Kazakhstan’s transition to a green economy model".
