Turkmenistan starts building new highway to city near Uzbekistan border

ASHGABAT (TCA) — Turkmenistan has begun construction on a multi-billion-dollar, cross-country highway project that the gas-rich and largely isolated Central Asian nation hopes will help generate more regional trade, RFE/RL reported. The State News Agency of Turkmenistan reported on January 24 that the Turkmen President’s decree had ordered to start works in January 2019 and to complete the construction of the highway and all facilities in three phases until December 2023. The four-lane highway is projected to link Turkmenistan’s capital of Ashgabat to the city of Turkmenabat near the border with Uzbekistan. The government newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan reported on January 25 that the artery, expected to cost $2.3 billion when completed, will stretch across some 600 kilometers of desert. It is hoped the new highway will boost regional trade by linking with another planned artery linking the capital to the port of Turkmenbashi, on the Caspian Sea coast. The son of Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, a deputy regional governor, was on hand for a ceremony to mark the launch of construction on January 24. Serdar Berdymukhammedov called the highway an example of Turkmenistan's "great support to the private sector, which is developing rapidly in our country." The road will be constructed by a little-known private company called Turkmen Awtoban, with a loan provided by the national bank. Turkmen state television said the road construction aims to build up cargo transit along key trade corridors leading to Europe and the Middle East.

EBRD supports public road infrastructure development in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE (TCA) — The population of the Tajik capital Dushanbe will benefit from short travel times and state-of-the-art transport solutions following the opening of a new modern road interchange built with financial support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Bank reported on September 7. With a population of over 800,000, Dushanbe is the largest municipality in Tajikistan. The new three-level road will reduce travel times through the city centre, providing much-needed congestion relief and improving the ecological situation. The interchange, which is used by more than 18,000 vehicles per hour, is an integral part of the Dushanbe-Uzbekistan border road improvement project jointly financed by the EBRD (US$ 62.5 million) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (US$ 27.5 million). The road was opened this week by the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, in a ceremony also attended by EBRD Head of Tajikistan, Ayten Rustamova, and the Mayor of Dushanbe, Rustam Emomali. The road was built in accordance with best international standards and has several important features such as an improved traffic management set-up designed to reduce congestion, underground pedestrian crossings, modern road marking, safety barriers and LED lighting. Its throughput capacity as well as its safety, both for motorists and pedestrians, has increased significantly. The project, which was supervised by an international engineering company, also complies with the best social and environmental standards, which is a benchmark for projects of such type in the country. To date, the EBRD has invested over €608 million (US$ 700 million) in various sectors of Tajikistan’s economy.

DUSHANBE (TCA) — Tajikistan is Central Asia’s least connected and most isolated country. Tajikistan has only limited regional and international connectivity and transportation by road is often the only option, given the country’s alpine topography and small rail network, the World Bank reported on its website.
