EU–Central Asia environmental cooperation focuses on green investments

TASHKENT (TCA) — High level representatives of all five Central Asian countries, the European Union, International Financial Institutions (IFIs), international and regional organizations, and NGOs gathered for the 8th meeting of the EU-CA Working Group on Environment and Climate Change (WGECC) on 7-8 June in Tashkent, Uzbekistan to discuss the progress in cooperation on environment, climate change and water. FAO, GEF launch project to nurture natural resources in Central Asia, Turkey

ALMATY (TCA) — In the past 50 years, the population of the Central Asia region has tripled. With the need to feed a larger number of people amid increasingly limited water resources and highly vulnerable climatic conditions, the region faces serious food security challenges, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said. A newly launched regional project from FAO and the Global Environment Facility aims to tackle these challenges in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Kyrgyzstan to scale-up disaster and climate change resilience with World Bank support

BISHKEK (TCA) — All citizens of Kyrgyzstan will potentially benefit from a Project that will ensure risk reduction investment in educational infrastructure, a stronger capacity to respond to disasters, and a better environment to scale-up the country’s mandatory disaster insurance program. The Enhancing Resilience in Kyrgyzstan Project has been approved by the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors, with US$ 20 million from the International Development Association (IDA), including US$ 10 million as a concessional credit and US$ 10 million as a grant, the World Bank said. Tajikistan: sustainable management of natural resources helps communities adapt to climate change

DUSHANBE (TCA) — Over 90% of Tajikistan’s territory is mountainous, making it prone to a wide range of natural disasters such as floods, landslides, avalanches and earthquakes. Kyrgyzstan ranks third most vulnerable to climate change impacts in Central Asia

BISHKEK (TCA) — Recent climate resilience research has shown that Kyrgyzstan is the third most vulnerable to climate change impacts in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, primarily due to the sensitivity of its agricultural systems to climatic change. Impacts such as climate temperature change could cause altered precipitation patterns and more frequent heat extremes, leading to increased incidence of aridity and drought, particularly in the mountain pastures. Since Kyrgyzstan’s land area is 90% mountainous, it is increasingly important to build resilience to these climate changes and to enable communities to continue thriving. Continue reading
