Rosatom to Neutralize Hazardous Chemical Waste at Plant in Kyrgyzstan

Rosatom is set to begin work to eliminate hazardous chemicals stockpiled at the Kristall plant in Tash-Kumyr, in Kyrgyzstan’s Jalal-Abad region. The Kristall plant, built in 1989 as a key facility of the Soviet electronics industry to produce polycrystalline silicon, has since become a high-risk environmental site. Hazardous chemical waste accumulated on its premises poses a threat to both the environment and public health. The plant has been bankrupt since 2010. The site contains 49 tanks holding a total of 155 tons of hazardous chemical residues, including trichlorosilane and silicon tetrachloride. In October 2024, Rosatom conducted a technical audit of the facility, revealing the deteriorated condition of the storage tanks. Prolonged inactivity has left the aging infrastructure in poor shape, increasing the risk of structural failure and depressurization. On April 14, in Bishkek, Rosatom and the Kyrgyz Ministry of Emergency Situations discussed technological solutions for neutralizing the chemicals. According to Rosatom, the first phase of the cleanup is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. This stage will focus on bringing the chemical storage tanks to a safe condition. It also involves the installation of a dual emergency protection system and the introduction of independent environmental monitoring. The proposed neutralization methods have been approved by the Kyrgyz Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision. By the end of 2026, Rosatom aims to eliminate the risk of leaks and uncontrolled emissions by stabilizing the tanks and ensuring safe conditions for further handling of the hazardous substances. In 2027, the project will enter its second phase, focusing on the on-site neutralization of the chemicals as the preferred solution. Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Minister Kanatbek Chynybayev said the situation at the Kristall plant remains environmentally challenging and requires a comprehensive response. “Our primary objective is to eliminate potential health risks to residents of Tash-Kumyr and lift the state of emergency in the area. Rosatom’s expertise has been engaged to address this issue. As part of this collaboration, a technological strategy has been developed that will allow the threats to be neutralized within the specified timeframe and return the site to a safe condition,” he said.

Natural Barriers: Kyrgyzstan Fights Disasters with Reforestation

Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, in collaboration with representatives of the World Bank, has surveyed floodplain areas in the Jalal-Abad region to identify zones most vulnerable to erosion and flooding. The ministry's press service reported that environmental protection efforts will soon begin in these areas, aimed at strengthening soil stability and reducing the risk of natural disasters. The Forestry Institute had earlier designated the region as a pilot site for environmental initiatives. Emergency services personnel and forestry specialists plan to plant trees to establish protective forest belts. The trees’ root systems are expected to reinforce the soil and serve as natural barriers against landslides and mudflows. Last year, the region suffered severe rainfall, triggering mudslides that nearly destroyed two villages. A 10-year-old child lost their life, and over 300 families were evacuated. The disaster also inundated a section of the Bishkek-Osh highway, paralyzing traffic for several hours. “Visiting the ravines allowed us to assess their current condition and identify the areas most vulnerable to erosion. The timely implementation of protective measures, such as planting trees and applying bioengineering solutions, will not only mitigate flood risks but also help restore ecological balance,” the ministry stated. The project is funded by the World Bank and the International Development Association. The Jalal-Abad region has been selected for the pilot phase, with similar initiatives planned for other regions across the country. A recent World Bank report emphasized the economic costs of forest loss, noting its impact on the water cycle, soil stability, and drought resilience, factors that contribute to billions of dollars in global losses. “People and communities around the world are facing not only an environmental crisis but also an economic one. The good news is that solutions exist. If countries start investing now, natural systems can be restored, delivering strong returns in economic growth and job creation,” said Axel van Trotsenburg, Senior Managing Director at the World Bank. Experts argue that environmental programs should not be viewed as obstacles to development, but rather as key to building more sustainable and resilient economies.

Kyrgyzstan’s Kazarman Airport Reopens After 20-Year Hiatus

Kazarman Airport in Kyrgyzstan’s southern Jalal-Abad region has reopened after more than 20 years, following a major reconstruction project by JSC Airports of Kyrgyzstan. Located near the village of Kazarman, the airport is now ready to receive flights once again. The renovation included repairs to the 1,840 meter runway, taxiways, aircraft parking areas, and the passenger terminal. The facility can accommodate aircraft weighing up to 22 tons and currently operates during daylight hours. Built in 1985, Kazarman Airport previously served flights to Bishkek, Osh, and Jalal-Abad. On August 12, state-owned Asman Airlines made its first flight to the renovated airport, and regular flights to Bishkek are scheduled to begin in early September. “The return of Kazarman Airport to operation is an important step for the development of the country’s transport network. Now residents and visitors of the Jalal-Abad region will be able to get to Bishkek faster and more conveniently,” said Manasbek Samidinov, Chairman of the Board of JSC Airports of Kyrgyzstan. The reopening comes as Kyrgyzstan continues to expand its aviation infrastructure. In May 2025, construction began on a new international airport in Jalal-Abad, the country’s third-largest city, designed to handle passenger and cargo aircraft including Boeing 737s and Airbus A320/A321s. At the groundbreaking, President Sadyr Japarov highlighted rising demand for both domestic and international flights. Since 2021, passenger traffic has grown by 46% and the number of flights by 31%, he said. Asman Airlines has restored all domestic routes linking Bishkek with Talas, Karakol, and Kerben, and in 2024 added two Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 short-haul aircraft to its fleet. The Kazarman and Jalal-Abad projects are part of a broader strategy to modernize Kyrgyzstan’s airports. Work began in February 2025 on a new complex at Osh International Airport, and Karakol International Airport and Talas Airport have already opened. Renovations are also underway at Issyk-Kul International Airport and Naryn Airport.

Kyrgyzstan Launches Major Gold Exploration at Historic Makmal Deposit

Kyrgyzstan has initiated large-scale geological exploration at the historic Makmal gold deposit in the Jalal-Abad region, marking the first such effort in decades. The announcement was made by Kyrgyzaltyn, the state-owned enterprise responsible for gold and precious metals mining. According to the company, its subsidiary, Makmal Gold Company, has begun exploratory drilling in the southwestern section of the mine, an area previously untouched by mining operations. Soviet-era geological surveys suggest that this zone may hold up to four tons of gold reserves. "Extensive work is underway to extend the life of the Makmal mine," the Kyrgyzaltyn press service stated. "We plan to drill 19 wells at depths ranging from 140 to 400 meters. This will help us better define reserves and create additional employment opportunities." The exploration will proceed in two phases. In the first stage, geologists will drill a total of 3,275 meters. If results are favorable, a one-kilometer tunnel will be constructed to allow for precise reserve estimation, laying the groundwork for future industrial extraction. Kyrgyzaltyn also plans to evaluate other previously unexplored areas of the deposit. Historic and Economic Significance The Makmal deposit, one of Kyrgyzstan’s earliest gold mining sites, began industrial operations in 1986. Originally projected to last ten years, the discovery of new veins has kept the mine active to the present day. Currently, the mine contributes more than 95% of budget revenues for the Toguz-Toro district. Makmalzoloto, the operator, has also invested significantly in regional infrastructure, allocating 54 million Kyrgyz som (approximately $618,000) over the past three years, with an additional 50 million som ($572,000) directed toward charitable initiatives. The company employs more than 500 workers, nearly all of whom are local residents. While the annual output is modest, less than one ton, Makmal remains among the ten largest operational gold mines in the country. Kyrgyzstan has around 2,500 registered mineral deposits, of which 46 are classified as large.
