Dedicated Space for Children Established in Police Department of Turkmenabad

The Police Department in Turkmenabad City has unveiled its second child-friendly room, aligning with global best practices aimed at enhancing protective measures for young girls and boys who may be victims or witnesses of potential crimes. Inaugurated by representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkmenistan, the UNICEF Representative, and the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Turkmenistan, this facility offers a secure and comforting space designed specifically for children. The room prioritizes their age, maturity, and psychological well-being, ensuring a non-threatening atmosphere. Collaborating closely with the Ministry, UNICEF has played a pivotal role in aligning special child protection measures with internationally recognized standards for juvenile justice. “Turkmenistan, as a state party to major international human rights and children's rights treaties, pays special attention to strengthening the provision and protection of the rights of all children in contact with the law, including child victims and witnesses of crime,” said Geldimyrat Haldurdiyev, Head of the Department of Law and International Relations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. “The application of special measures provided protection and assistance to minors and improved the quality of the evidence obtained from them, which served to safeguard their interests.”

Police in Turkmenistan Apprehend Former RFE/RL Correspondent

The police in Koneurgench, northern Turkmenistan, have apprehended Hudaiberdy Allashov, a former correspondent for RFE/RL, on undisclosed charges. Family members informed RFE/RL that Allashov was taken into custody on December 1st following a summons from the police. They allege that during this encounter, he was subjected to physical abuse and electric shocks. His current location and the rationale behind his arrest remain unknown. Allashov's association with RFE/RL dates back to a brief three-month stint in 2016. However, his tenure ended abruptly when he and his mother were arrested on accusations of using chewing tobacco, an offense deemed unlawful in the tightly-governed former Soviet nation. Both Allashov and his mother, Kurbantach Arazmedova, refuted these charges at the time. Their initial arrest drew international attention, leading to their release in mid-February 2017, albeit with a court conviction for possession of chewing tobacco, each receiving a three-year suspended prison sentence. Following his release, Allashov chose to cease his work with RFE/RL, expressing concerns for his safety. Nevertheless, in October 2019, he was detained once again, enduring hours of questioning allegedly accompanied by physical assault. The situation took a toll on his mother, who fell ill and passed away in the hospital two days later. In a separate incident in May 2022, Allashov and his wife, Ejesh Arazgylyjeva, were allegedly subjected to violent treatment by an official in Koneurgench, resulting in Arazgylyjeva's hospitalization and necessitating medical attention for Allashov himself. Turkmenistan's government maintains a tight grip over media outlets, including newspapers, radio, television, and online platforms.

Turkmenistan Strengthens Cooperation with UNODC

A significant meeting convened at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna on November 8, 2023, witnessing the collaboration between Turkmenistan's Deputy Prosecutor General-led delegation and the leadership of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Central to the discussions was Turkmenistan's recent decision to become a part of the Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities, known as the GlobE system. Both parties acknowledged this step and expressed their mutual readiness to engage in robust collaboration within this network, indicating a shared commitment to combatting corruption. The meeting delved into the comprehensive efforts under the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its three additional Protocols, signifying the mutual dedication to addressing transnational criminal activities. Additionally, discussions encompassed the implementation and impact of the UN Convention against Corruption, reflecting the shared pursuit of curbing corruption on a global scale. Amidst the dialogue, the participants explored the future potential for collaboration between Turkmenistan and UNODC, highlighting the ongoing commitment to foster partnerships and initiatives aimed at promoting security, justice, and the rule of law.

Turkmenistan Observes World Day Against Human Trafficking

On July 30th, Turkmenistan observed the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, a significant event supported by public associations across the country in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Commemorated annually as per the UN General Assembly's resolution, this day serves as a global reminder of the grave issue of human trafficking. Under the theme, "Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind," various initiatives were organized in multiple regions, emphasizing the crucial need to combat trafficking and support its victims. In Ashgabat, the Public Association Yenme orchestrated an event titled, “Stop Human Trafficking.” This gathering saw the active participation of 42 young activists and volunteers. Through interactive sessions, the attendees delved into discussions highlighting the pivotal role of safe and regulated migration in preventing human trafficking. The event incorporated educational tools such as the screening of the video, "5 Facts About Human Trafficking," and an engaging interactive game called, "Degrees of Risk." Participants received informative booklets and souvenirs to further disseminate awareness. Simultaneously, the Ynamly Egindesh Economic Society, operating a hotline in Ashgabat, conducted an awareness-raising event focusing on the multifaceted risks leading individuals into the peril of human trafficking. Emphasizing the vulnerability of various population groups to exploitation by traffickers, discussions revolved around strategies to enhance the efficacy of anti-trafficking measures. Attendees were briefed on the "Vaccination Against Stereotypes" project and society's efforts in preventing trafficking. Turkmenabat witnessed an impactful exhibition organized by the Public Association Taze Zaman. The display featured drawings and cartoons created by residents of Lebap province, educating individuals about the dangers and aftermath of irregular migration and human trafficking. Supported by the city administration, the event also distributed informational materials and products themed around combating trafficking, courtesy of IOM in Turkmenistan. According to The Exodus Road, Turkmenistan ranks among the five worst countries in the world for human trafficking.
