ASTANA (TCA) — UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan Mr. Norimasa Shimomura and the Head of Cooperation Unit of the Delegation of the European Union (EUD) to Kazakhstan Mr. Johannes Stenbaek on 4-5 May visited the Aktobe region, where UNDP and EUD installed an early flood warning system within their joint pilot project called "Supporting Kazakhstan’s transition to a green economy model". ALMATY (TCA) — A two-day ultra-marathon took place on April 27 and 28 in the Almaty Region to mark the creation of the new Ile-Balkash State Nature Reserve. The ultra-marathon was organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kazakhstan, Kazakh Agriculture Ministry’s Forestry and Wildlife Committee and the Marat#ON runners’ club of Marat Zhylanbayev, with support from Almaty Regional Administration, UNDP in Kazakhstan reported. BISHKEK (TCA) — Extreme weather risk is rampant across Central Asia. In Tajikistan, as much as 36 percent of the country’s territory is under threat from landslides. In Kyrgyzstan, avalanches pose a growing threat to communities, with more than 330 recorded avalanches occurring between 1990 and 2009. In remote areas, the threats from mountain hazards are exacerbated by existing conditions of poverty, insufficient infrastructure, and poor resources, the World Bank reported on its website.
