OSCE donates equipment to assist in disaster risk reduction in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE (TCA) — Fifty sets of radio equipment (HF/VHF radios) were handed to the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defence under the Government of Tajikistan by the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe on December 19. The equipment will mainly be used for the early warning system for natural disasters in the region of Sarez Lake and to facilitate communication with the population of the settlements along the Bartang River in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan. European Union, Central Asia partners achieve results in disaster risk reduction

ALMATY (TCA) — Projects supported by the European Union in Central Asia have had a significant impact in helping communities to be better prepared for natural disasters. The European Union's Disaster Preparedness Programme (DipECHO) has invested €46 million in over 100 projects across the region, supporting both the population and the governments of the region in preparing for and mitigating the consequences of natural disasters since 2003. The countries that have benefited are Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, the Delegation of the European Union to Kazakhstan said on November 13. Continue reading

WFP helps Tajikistan to strengthen emergency preparedness and response

DUSHANBE (TCA) — A ceremony was held to mark the handover by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) of the Information Technology (IT) equipment to strengthen the capacity of Tajikistan’s Information Management and Analytical Centre (IMAC). Kazakhstan airports prepare to support disaster relief efforts

ALMATY (TCA) — Deutsche Post DHL Group and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will support Kazakhstan authorities in their efforts to build resilience against future natural disasters by conducting a five-day disaster preparedness training and assessment program at Almaty International Airport. The two partners will team up with airport and government officials and other humanitarian response experts in the Central Asian country to host their internationally recognized Getting Airports Ready for Disaster (GARD) program from 18 to 22 September. World Bank project to help Tajikistan cope with natural disasters

DUSHANBE (TCA) — The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors on July 10 approved US$50 million from the International Development Association for the Strengthening Critical Infrastructure Against Natural Hazards Project in Tajikistan. The project will strengthen the country’s capacity to prepare for, mitigate and respond to natural disasters. Related investments will help Tajikistan—a country prone to floods, mudslides, and earthquakes, and exposed to considerable climate change risks—to be able to prepare for potential natural disasters and to improve critical infrastructure, the World Bank said.
