Tourism in Kyrgyzstan: ambitious goals, poor roads and safety problems

BISHKEK (TCA) — Considering that the World Nomad Games are to be held in 2018, it is expected that there will be a deficit of Kyrgyzstan’s state budget in the second half of the year, the Eurasian Development Bank said in its monthly macroeconomic review. World Nomad Games According to the Finance Ministry of Kyrgyzstan, it is planned to spend 306.3 million soms for the coming World Nomad Games (WNG) to be held from September 2 to September 8 on the Lake Issyk-Kul coast. Earlier this month, the WNG organizers asked businesses and state organizations to provide voluntary financial support for the event. The State Ecological Inspectorate is still the only state agency that has allocated money for the Games. The Inspectorate’s employees transferred their one-day salaries to the account of the World Ethnic Sports Confederation in favor of preparations for the WNG 2018. Meanwhile tickets for the third World Nomad Games are already on sale. Entrance tickets are strictly individual, with QR-codes. Tickets should be bought only for the opening and closing ceremonies (from 400 to 4.9 thousand soms). Entrance to other events will be free. Deputy Minister of Culture, Tourism and Information Ainura Temirbekova believes that the upcoming competitions will outperform the past ones in 2014 and 2016. At Kyrchyn jailoo, an ethno-town is being constructed. From 3 to 6 September, a cultural program will be held there including national songs and dances, clothing and food exhibitions, theatrical staging of Kyrgyz traditions and customs, yurt design and assembling, and folk crafts contests. The WNG organizers will try to surprise and delight the guests. In 2016, the appearance of a thousand of komuzists at the arena of the hippodrome caused the spectators’ admiration. Komuz is an ancient Kyrgyz string instrument. Foreign guests were more interested in customs and traditions of nomads than sports competitions. Therefore, this year the organizers decided to improve the cultural part of the program focused on both the external attributes of the nomadic life and the inner world and spirit of nomads. However, the lofty intentions to hold a high-level international event are not fully implemented. Scandalous road Scandals are continuing around the construction of a ring road around Issyk-Kul Lake, on the shore of which the WNG will be held. Recently, the Prosecutor General's Office initiated a criminal case related to the construction of the Balykchi-Korumdu road. According to the investigation, the Transport Ministry illegally used budget funds in attracting consulting services. Construction of this road, estimated at 6.8 billion soms, is the only major project financed from the state budget. The construction project which began in 2015 and was due to be completed in December of 2017, was accompanied by corruption scandals. In April of 2016, the scandal over this road led to the resignation of then Prime Minister Temir Sariev and Transport Minister Argynbek Malabaev. The total length of the Balykchi-Korumdu road is 104 kilometers, and only a section from the 33rd to 104th kilometer has been completed. Travel safety The incident...

Uzbekistan to set up free economic zone producing sports goods

TASHKENT (TCA) — The President of Uzbekistan has approved the decision to create a free economic zone “Sport” in the Tashkent region. It will represent an industrial cluster with dozens of enterprises specializing in the production of sportswear and sports equipment, with the participation of the world’s leading manufacturers, the Jahon information agency reported. The FEZ “Sport” will be created before June 30, 2018. It is planned to attract such well-known brands as Adidas, Reebok, Nike, Li Ning, Eleiko, Janssen-Fritsen, Gymnova, and others. Negotiations with foreign partners will be conducted by the State Committee for Investments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, as well as the National Project Management Agency and the Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports. To date, the sports goods industry in Uzbekistan is in its infancy. Basically, these products are produced by enterprises of the automobile industry. So, the joint Uzbek-Korean enterprise Uz-Tong Hong Co., which produces seats for cars, in parallel produces basketball, football, volleyball, tennis and other kinds of balls. It also produces many types of sports equipment — trampolines, tennis and badminton racquets, and sports shoes. At the same time, most of the market is occupied by cheap Chinese products that are not always of the appropriate quality. Therefore, one of the immediate tasks of the new free economic zone is the saturation of the domestic market and the ousting of Chinese imports first from the country and then from the region.

Kyrgyzstan renews the World Nomad Games concept

BISHKEK (TCA) — Kyrgyzstan has been ranked among the top five travel destinations for 2018 by the British Backpacker Society. Pakistan, which ranks first, was described as “one of the friendliest countries on earth, with mountain scenery that is beyond anyone’s wildest imagination”. The five top list also includes Russia, India and Turkey. The British Backpacker Society inspires people to travel to rarely visited destinations in the developing world and is followed by thousands of people online. World Nomad Games The Third World Nomad Games (WNG) in Kyrgyzstan, scheduled for September 2018, will be innovative not only in their concept, but their image has also been updated, adding more colors and symbolism, the WNG Secretariat said this week. The First WNG were held in September 2014 and the Second WNG in September 2016. The WNG renewed concept is aimed at revealing the culture of various nomadic peoples around the world. The Third World Nomad Games will be not only an international competition, but also a platform for cultural disclosure of all nomadic peoples of the world. Each color and each symbol in the updated logo has a semantic idea for representatives of nomadic peoples. Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Sapar Isakov officially launched the preparations for the Third World Nomad Games in December 2017. More than two thousand athletes, artists and scientists will gather at the Games. An ethnic and cultural town will be opened on the shore of Lake Issyk-Kul in the picturesque Karchyn Gorge and an international scientific conference will be held there to discuss the role of the nomadic civilization in the human development. "The Nomadic culture and civilization are among the oldest in the world and are gaining popularity among the younger generation every year," Isakov said, adding that the preservation of the spiritual values and life of nomads is among the main tasks of the future WNG. "We want to show the world nomadic culture and civilization, to reveal a nomad as an enlightened and educated person, a person of will and deed, thinker and philosopher," Isakov said. The 3rd WNG will have three directions — science, culture and sports. An ethnic festival will include a fashion show, contests of dancers and masters of painting and a crafts fair. The most attention will be paid to sports tournaments including horse races, archery, hunting with falcons and golden eagles. Modern sports will also be presented. Over three billion soms were spent for the Second WNG held in September 2016, and a third of that amount went for the construction of a new racecourse in Cholpon-Ata that meets all modern requirements. Next to this facility, the Russian Gazprom built a sports and health complex for 700 seats. The Government plans to allocate 302 million soms for the forthcoming Games because all the necessary facilities have already been built. Kumtor Gold Company will act as the general sponsor of the Third WNG. IFMGA membership Kyrgyzstan was unanimously accepted as a member of the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations...
