ALMATY (TCA) — A two-day regional seminar entitled “The role of women and youth in conflict prevention in Central Asia” concluded on June 20 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The event was organized by the Ashgabat-based UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) in cooperation with the UN-Women Multi-country Office in Central Asia (UN-Women) and the Regional Office of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. First ‘clean zone’ for female convicts will be constructed in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK (TCA) — The Central Asia Drug Action Programme’s (CADAP) representatives last week met with Taalaybek Zhaparov, the Chairman of the State Service on Execution of Punishments under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic to discuss the preparations for the construction of the "Clean zone" for convicted women in the women's correctional institution No. 2, where it is planned to support and rehabilitate those who made a choice to quit drug use. Rural women in Kyrgyzstan improve agricultural productivity, leadership skills through UN-supported project

BISHKEK (TCA) — Participants of the joint UN and the Kyrgyzstan government “Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment” (RWEE) project increased their agricultural production by 30-70 percent over a 4-year period, thus confirming the benefits of increasing economic opportunities for rural women. Additionally, RWEE participants achieved a 30 percent increase in income from the launch of business activities such as greenhouses, bakeries, photo studios, computer courses, and carpet workshops, and contributed to reduced rural unemployment, the project partners said. Kyrgyzstan’s new domestic violence law to improve response to abuse — HRW

BISHKEK (TCA) — Kyrgyzstan’s President Almazbek Atambayev took an important step toward curbing violence against women when he signed a new domestic violence law and accompanying legislation on April 27, Human Rights Watch said on May 10. The law, which replaces a 2003 version, includes measures to improve protections for victims of domestic abuse and strengthen police and judicial response. Continue reading

OSCE-supported Association of Women in Security Sector established in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK (TCA) — The Kyrgyz Association of Women in the Security Sector (KAWSS) was established on March 2 in Bishkek at a founding conference organized by the OSCE Centre in cooperation with the Kyrgyz Association of Women Police (KAWP), the Presidential Administration, the Parliament, the Defence Council, the Supreme Court, the Government, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Interior Ministry and all state security-providing structures.
