DUSHANBE (TCA) — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Governments of Tajikistan and Japan on September 7 signed a new, four year project that is expected to benefit people in Tajikistan and Afghanistan (Badakhshan, Takhar and Kunduz Provinces) through strengthening the two countries’ disaster risk reduction and response capacities and the promotion of cross-border cooperation with Afghanistan to improve disaster response in line with the call under the latest “Central Asia plus Japan” Dialogue, UNDP Tajikistan reported. DUSHANBE (TCA) — Tajikistan President Emomali Rakhmon on June 25 inaugurated a drinking water supply project that is expected to benefit 58 households, housing 354 people in disaster affected area of Ghudara village of Bartang valley, Rushan district, in Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). The project that aims at improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation was implemented by Aga Khan Foundation and supported by the government of Finland, the Aga Khan Development Network said. ASTANA (TCA) — The World Bank Board of Directors has approved a US $5 million grant by the Global Environment Facility for providing technical support to the Government of Kazakhstan and the local insurance market to help address the effects of climate change on the national economy through the development of an advanced insurance market infrastructure, the World Bank said. BISHKEK (TCA) — As part of the Multi-year Joint Capacity Development Program on Disaster Management (MJCD Program) which was started in 2012 by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Government of Kyrgyzstan and both KOICA and JICA will hold a Joint Seminar on Disaster Management on March 16 and 17 in Bishkek.
