UN secretary-general visits Aral Sea disaster area in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT (TCA) — As part of his visit to Central Asia, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on June 10 visited the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan – once the world's fourth largest inland sea, that has now shrunk to about a quarter of its original size due to human mismanagement. Kazakhstan ranks 56th in Human Development Report as country with high human development

ASTANA (TCA) — Global, Regional, and National Human Development Reports for 2016 have been presented at Nazarbayev University in Astana, bringing together the representatives of Kazakhstan’s Parliament, key ministries and departments, the academia and civil society. The reports were presented by the experts from the UN Headquarters and from the Istanbul Regional Hub of the United Nations Development Programme. In addition, Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, the Commissioner-General for EXPO-2017, Assistant Secretary General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS participated in the presentation, UNDP in Kazakhstan said on June 8. Rural women in Kyrgyzstan improve agricultural productivity, leadership skills through UN-supported project

BISHKEK (TCA) — Participants of the joint UN and the Kyrgyzstan government “Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment” (RWEE) project increased their agricultural production by 30-70 percent over a 4-year period, thus confirming the benefits of increasing economic opportunities for rural women. Additionally, RWEE participants achieved a 30 percent increase in income from the launch of business activities such as greenhouses, bakeries, photo studios, computer courses, and carpet workshops, and contributed to reduced rural unemployment, the project partners said. UNRCCA helps to build confidence between Central Asia countries on water, economic cooperation issues

BISHKEK (TCA) — This year the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), based in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat, marks its 10th anniversary. In his interview with Uzbekistan’s Jahon information agency, Petko Draganov, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and UNRCCA head, said that the Center has provided a platform for Central Asian governments for dialogue on the most complex regional issues, including trans-boundary water use, countering security threats, strengthening stability, and developing regional cooperation. UNRCCA, based in Turkmenistan, promotes regional cooperation in Central Asia

ASHGABAT (TCA) — The UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) is marking its tenth anniversary as an entity working on a mandate focused on preventive diplomacy. The Centre, located in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat, was established at the initiative of five Central Asian states by exchange of letters between the UN Secretary General and the President of the Security Council on 16 May 2007. In a region increasingly confronted with challenges and threats, UNRCCA has deployed preventive efforts to promote regional cooperation and assist Central Asian states to find mutually acceptable and beneficial solutions to these regional challenges, UNRCCA said. Switzerland supports 10-year project enhancing Kyrgyz parliamentarism

BISHKEK (TCA) — UNDP in Kyrgyzstan has informed about the launch of a new project “Strong and Inclusive Parliamentary Democracy” aimed at strengthening parliamentary democracy in Kyrgyzstan, ensuring its transparency and accountability to citizens. The project will be implemented by UNDP in Kyrgyzstan and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The total budget of the project for 10 years is 9.8 million Swiss francs, the Embassy of Switzerland in the Kyrgyz Republic said on May 3. Continue reading
