US embassy presents American films, Silk Road photography in Turkmenistan

ASHGABAT (TCA) — On July 20, the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan will kick off its country-wide annual summer film screenings, featuring three popular American films with themes of teamwork, diligence, empathy, and achieving personal goals. The films will be shown in July and August at theaters in Ashgabat, Balkanabat, Dashoguz, Mary, Turkmenabat, and Turkmenbashy. U.S. Embassy personnel will introduce the films and greet visitors before and after the screenings.

In addition to the films, the Embassy will organize a photography exhibition at each film screening venue connected to the 2018 theme “Turkmenistan is the Heart of the Great Silk Road”. The exhibition will include iconic Silk Road sites photographed by American Tom Till, who traveled to Turkmenistan in September to October 2017. Many of the sites featured in the photography exhibition—including the Caravanserai at Dayahatyn and the Greater Gyz Gala in ancient Merv—have been researched and restored through the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.

Coco, a computer-animated film from Pixar Animation Studios, earned $806 million worldwide to become one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. A Dog’s Purpose, a feature film, tells a unique story about empathy from the perspective of a family pet. Mary Poppins, the classic musical from 1964, won 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and is one of the most renowned American films of the last century.

The summer film screenings and photography exhibition will run from July 20 to August 12 according to the following schedule. All films will be shown in Russian with English subtitles and are open to the public free of charge.
