TASHKENT (TCA) — Following his constructive visit to Uzbekistan in November, the OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger signed a Joint Commitment with Uzbekistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gayrat Fazilov in Vienna on 7 December to jointly implement a road map on enhanced cooperation between the OSCE and the country.
The road map, formally called the ‘Action Plan on further development of co-operation of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the OSCE in 2018-2019’, was proposed by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev during the OSCE Secretary General’s visit to the country from 9 to 11 November 2017.
The Joint Commitment covers a wide-ranging list of activities in all three dimensions of the OSCE’s work – the politico-military, economic and environmental and human dimensions, stating that these are designed to “contribute to the National Action Strategy of the Government of Uzbekistan (2017-2021) and promote the OSCE agenda in Uzbekistan.”
The document adds that the Government of Uzbekistan and the OSCE are committed “to work together to build a more prosperous, resilient and sustainable society.”
In Uzbekistan, the OSCE pursues the following tasks: to assist the Government of Uzbekistan in its efforts to ensure security and stability, including fighting against terrorism, violent extremism, illegal drug trafficking and other transnational threats and challenges; to support the efforts of the Government with regard to further socioeconomic development and the protection of the environment; to assist the Government in the implementation of OSCE principles and of its commitments taken within the OSCE framework, including those related to the development of civil society, as well as in the development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the OSCE.
