OSCE donates equipment to assist in disaster risk reduction in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE (TCA) — Fifty sets of radio equipment (HF/VHF radios) were handed to the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defence under the Government of Tajikistan by the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe on December 19. The equipment will mainly be used for the early warning system for natural disasters in the region of Sarez Lake and to facilitate communication with the population of the settlements along the Bartang River in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan.

“The Programme Office in Dushanbe is glad to contribute to the improvement of communication capabilities of the Committee of Emergency Situations and the Civil Defence of the Republic of Tajikistan,” said Edward Safaryan, Acting Head of the Economic and Environmental Department at the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe. “We hope that this collaboration between the Office and the Committee will continue and will include not only handover of the assets but also the strengthening of capacity building through provision of more expertise and the exchange of experiences.”

Zarif Saidov, Head of the Department for training of rescue workers, thanked the OSCE for its support in enhancing the early warning system. “This technical equipment will be used effectively to increase our capacities in disaster risk reduction.”

The donation was made at the request of the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defence of the Republic of Tajikistan.
