Turkmenistan president visits Tajikistan to expand cooperation

DUSHANBE (TCA) — A Declaration and Agreement on strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and Tajikistan and a package of other interstate documents were signed after talks between Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe on November 2.

Speaking to journalists after the talks, President Berdymukhamedov emphasized that the high-level meeting confirmed mutual intent and willingness of the sides to further steadfast consolidation of the partnership in different spheres and the presence of real opportunities for this, the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reported.

Special attention at the talks was paid to consolidation of peace and security in Central Asia, the Turkmen president said, adding that Turkmenistan and Tajikistan stand for active international support of Afghanistan and assistance in its efficient integration to regional and international economic processes, particularly in such important spheres as energy and transport.

Humanitarian component, assistance in training of qualified personnel for different branches of economy and social sphere are necessary aspects of the support of the Afghan people. In this context, the importance of the VII Conference of Regional Economic Cooperation for Afghanistan (RECCA-VII), which is to be held in Ashgabat on November 14–15, was highlighted.

The sides have started the construction of railway corridor Turkmenistan – Afghanistan – Tajikistan in the transport sphere. During the talks, the firm resolution of the two countries to complete this project was confirmed, the Turkmen leader said.

Having outlined the energy sector as a promising direction of cooperation, President Berdymukhamedov informed that taking into account new energy facilities commissioned in Turkmenistan’s Lebap and Mary provinces, Turkmenistan is going to supply electricity via Afghanistan to Tajikistan in autumn and winter periods should the Tajik side express its interest in it.
