Dutch company may participate in a new potato cluster in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT (TCA) — The Embassy of Uzbekistan in the Netherlands held negotiations with Erika den Daas, the CEO of Meijer, one of the world’s leading companies and supplier of seed potatoes, the Jahon information agency reported with reference to the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The parties exchanged views on prospects for establishing cooperation between Uzbekistan and Meijer.

The sides highly appreciated the membership of Uzbekistan in the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). The course of reforms initiated by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in agriculture and attraction of foreign investors to this sphere was also interesting to the Dutch side.

At the meeting, the parties noted that commissioning in the near future of Central Asia’s first plant for production of potato chips based on Dutch technologies opens up new opportunities for further expansion of production and export of value-added products.

Following the meeting, the parties reached an agreement on organizing visits of Uzbekistan delegations to the Netherlands in late January-February this year to discuss specific projects. In particular, visits of members of the Association of Potato Producers of Uzbekistan are planned. The delegation will hold negotiations on establishment of a joint venture for growing seed potatoes, as well as a potato cluster in Bakhmal district of Uzbekistan’s Jizzakh region.
