Saudi Arabia to provide $108 million for Tajik road project

DUSHANBE (TCA) — Saudi Arabia through the Islamic Development Bank will provide $108 million to Tajikistan for the reconstruction of two road sections Kulyab-Shuroabad and Shkev-Kalai Khumb of the Kulyab – Kalai Khumb motor road, Avesta news agency reported with reference to Tajikistan’s Transport Ministry.

The total length of the road sections that require reconstruction is around 500 kilometers. Tajikistan is in talks with international financial organizations on financing some sections of the road.  

Reconstruction of several sections of the Kulyab – Kalai Khumb road has been financed by the Islamic Development Bank, Saudi Fund for Development, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, OPEC Fund for International Development, and Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.   

The Kulyab – Kalai Khumb road will connect Tajikistan to the Karakarum highway in China and will ensure round-the-year transport communication with Afghanistan, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.  

During his visit to Saudi Arabia on January 4, Tajikistan President Emomali Rakhmon met with President of the Islamic Development Bank Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Ali. The sides expressed satisfaction with the long-term and fruitful cooperation of Tajikistan with the IDB, the Tajik presidential press service reported.

It was noted at the meeting that the bank had allocated to Tajikistan soft loans and technical assistance amounting to $325 million, aimed at the implementation of important projects in various social and economic spheres.

Now, the total amount of the bank’s active projects covering energy, transport, water supply, health and education sectors in Tajikistan exceeds $190 million.

Mutual satisfaction was also expressed with the financing of the reconstruction of the Shohon-Zighar-Kulyab-Kalai Khumb road.
