BISHKEK (TCA) — Will yesterday’s speech of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the UN General Assembly mark a new approach of Russia to its present confrontation with the United States? Russia was among six world powers that reached a final comprehensive agreement with Iran on its nuclear program in July and is now taking the lead in fighting ISIL in Syria, although it may require much more military resources than have been committed so far. If it may be the basis for a peace plan in Syria, previously unthinkable, remains to be seen, but the tone of Putin’s speech was certainly somber and aimed to find solutions. A rapprochement between Russia and the United States will certainly have large positive consequences also in Central Asia.
