BISHKEK, April 30 (TCA) - Heavy rains in southern Kyrgyzstan caused floods and landslides which destroyed at least 200 houses, local officials said on Friday.

The floods hit several towns and villages in the province of Osh, they said.

The residents of the storm-damaged regions said they lost livestock and pets, while reports say that mud has covered dozens of acres areas of arable land, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported.

However, there were no reports of deaths or missing people.

Farmers have called for financial help to clean up their fields of corn and wheat and replant areas that were destroyed, UniversalNewswires news site reported.

Currently cleanup work is under way.

Mudflows and floods occur frequently in Kyrgyzstan, which is located on the Tien-Shan Mountains.

The country’s mountainous terrain makes it susceptible to natural disasters, including snowfalls and avalanches during the winter season, and earthquakes at any time, according to UniversalNewswires.
